Belgium's Earth Overshoot Day Arrives Three Days Sooner Than Last Year

Global Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day is the day when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the planet can regenerate in that year.

Belgium's Overshoot Day

This year, Belgium's Earth Overshoot Day is three days earlier than last year. If the entire world lived the way Belgians do, humanity would have consumed all the natural resources available for the year by August 29th.

The Ecological Footprint measures the demand on the biosphere by calculating how much land and water area a given population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its waste, considering prevailing technology and resource management practices. This year, Belgium's Ecological Footprint is 8.4 global hectares per person, which is well above the global average of 1.7 global hectares per person.

The earlier arrival of Belgium's Earth Overshoot Day is a reminder of the need to reduce our ecological footprint and live more sustainably. As individuals, we can make changes in our own lives to reduce our consumption and waste. We can also support businesses and organizations that are working to reduce their environmental impact.

Collectively, we can make a difference in the fight against climate change and help to ensure that future generations have a healthy planet to live on.
