Colorado Michigan Report H3n2v Flu Infections

Second and Third U.S. Human Infections with Influenza A Virus H3N2v Reported

Nationally, there have been three human infections with a variant influenza A virus (H3N2) (H3N2v) reported to CDC this year.

Two of the cases were reported from Michigan and one case was reported from Colorado. All three cases had recent exposure to swine before their illness onset.

The Michigan cases include a 4-year-old girl from Ingham County and a 9-year-old boy from Jackson County. Both children attended the Ingham County Fair where swine were present. The Colorado case is an adult from Larimer County who had contact with swine.

All three patients have recovered from their illness. However, one of the Michigan cases was hospitalized. None of the cases have reported close contact with other people who have tested positive for the H3N2v virus.

The H3N2v virus is a variant of the H3N2 influenza virus that has been circulating in pigs since 2010. This is the first time that the H3N2v virus has been detected in humans in the United States.

The H3N2v virus is not currently included in the seasonal flu vaccine. However, the current seasonal flu vaccine does provide some protection against the H3N2v virus.

People who have been exposed to swine should be aware of the symptoms of the flu and should see a doctor if they develop any of these symptoms.
