Rabies Scare: Attendees at Englewood Puppy Adoption Event Urged to Get Screened

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has issued an urgent alert after a puppy adopted during an event in Englewood last month tested positive for rabies. Individuals who attended the adoption event on July 20 are being strongly urged to contact the state health hotline immediately to be screened for the potentially fatal disease.
The adoption event was held at Moms and Mutts Colorado Rescue for Pregnant and Nursing Dogs. According to CDPHE, anyone who came into contact with the infected puppy during the event could be at risk.
Rabies is a viral infection that can spread from infected animals to humans through bites or scratches. The virus attacks the central nervous system, leading to severe neurological symptoms and ultimately death if not treated promptly.
Symptoms of rabies can include fever, headache, muscle pain, and difficulty swallowing. In advanced stages, the infection can cause seizures, coma, and death.
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to rabies should seek medical attention immediately. The rabies vaccine is effective in preventing the disease if administered before symptoms develop.
