Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has been re-elected as an MP winning almost 50 percent of the vote in the London constituency he has represented since 1983.
Corbyn ran as an independent candidate after being suspended from the Labour Party in 2020 for his response to a report into anti-Semitism in the party.
The 73-year-old received 24,120 votes, compared to the Labour candidate's 16,834. The result was a significant swing towards Corbyn, who had a majority of just 4,648 in 2019.
In a victory speech, Corbyn thanked the people of Islington North for their support and said he would continue to fight for their interests.
"I am humbled and honored to have been re-elected as your Member of Parliament," he said. "I will continue to work tirelessly to represent you and to fight for the things that matter to you."
Corbyn's victory is a major blow to Labour leader Keir Starmer, who has been trying to distance the party from its former leader.
It is also a sign of the deep divisions within the Labour Party, which has been beset by infighting in recent years.
